Whether you would like to come to the UK to see family or friends, on business, or to receive medical treatment, you will require a UK Visitor visa to do so.

Please keep in mind that the UK Standard Visitor visa has now replaced the Family Visitor visa, General Visitor visa, Child Visitor visa, Business Visitor visa, Sports Visitor visa, Entertainer Visitor visa, Prospective Entrepreneur visa, Private Medical Treatment Visitor visa, Approved Destination Status (ADS) visa.

Broadly, if you are planning a single trip, you will require a short-term visitor visa. If you are planning regular visits to the UK, you may need to apply for a long-term visitor visa.

Short-term Visitor Visa

If you would like to travel to the UK for a holiday, to see your family or friends, to take part in business meetings or events, or to receive private medical treatment, you will need to apply for a Standard Visitor visa that will be valid for a short term.

The Home Office will need documentary evidence from you that you have enough funds to cover the complete costs of the trip for you and any family members travelling with you, and that you intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit.

A Standard Visitor visa currently costs £93.

Long-term Visitor Visa

If you need to visit the UK regularly over a longer period, you will require a long-term visitor visa. This visa will be valid for 2, 5, or 10 years. You will be able to stay in the UK for up to 6 months on each of your visits.

The Home Office will need documentary evidence from you that you have enough funds to cover the complete costs of the trip for you and any family members travelling with you, and that you intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit.

A long-term visitor visa currently costs £350 for 2 years, £636 for 5 years, £798 for 10 years.

Student Visitor Visa

Students wishing to come to the UK to study for a short period of time on a course that does not involve work or work experience can apply for a short-term student visitor visa.

The Home Office currently offers 3 types of student visitor visas:

  • Short-term student (6 months) – for applicants aged 16 and over for a maximum of 6 months’ study
  • Short-term student (11 months) – for applicants aged 16 and over for a maximum of 11 months’ English language study only
  • Short-term student (child) – for applicants aged under 16 for a maximum of 6 months’ study

If you are planning to study an English language course that is longer than 11 months, a course that is longer than 6 months, or a course that includes work placement or experience, you will need to apply for a Tier 4 visa.
